Biography
King Charles III, born Charles Philip Arthur George, is the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms. He became King on 8 September 2022 after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023. Before becoming King, he was the longest-serving Prince of Wales in British history and spent decades carrying out official duties while supporting causes related to the environment, rural communities, architecture, the arts, healthcare, education, faith, and youth opportunity. He is closely associated with charitable work through organisations such as The Prince's Trust, The Prince's Foundation, and The Prince of Wales's Charitable Fund. In recent years, King Charles III has remained in global news because of his reign, public duties, royal family developments, and his health. Buckingham Palace announced in 2024 that he had been diagnosed with cancer, and later reports said his treatment schedule would be reduced as his recovery moved into a more positive and precautionary phase. In May 2026, he continued official public engagements, including a visit to Northern Ireland with Queen Camilla.
Early Life
King Charles III was born on 14 November 1948 at Buckingham Palace in London. He is the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He became heir apparent in 1952 when his mother became Queen. Unlike earlier royal heirs who were often educated privately at the palace, Charles attended schools including Hill House, Cheam, and Gordonstoun. He later studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, and also spent time at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, where he studied Welsh before being invested as Prince of Wales in 1969.
Career
King Charles III became internationally famous as the heir to the British throne and later as King. As Prince of Wales, he carried out decades of official and ceremonial duties in the United Kingdom and overseas. He also became known for long-standing work on environmental protection, sustainable living, organic farming, architecture, interfaith dialogue, youth development, rural communities, and charitable initiatives. He established or supported several major organisations, including The Prince's Trust, The Prince's Foundation, and The Prince of Wales's Charitable Fund. He became King immediately after Queen Elizabeth II died on 8 September 2022 and was crowned on 6 May 2023. His recent public profile has included his royal duties, his cancer diagnosis announced in 2024, later positive updates about reduced treatment, and continued public engagements in 2026.
