Biography
Mỹ Tâm, full name Phan Thị Mỹ Tâm, is a Vietnamese singer and songwriter born on 16 January 1981 in Da Nang. She has been one of the leading names in Vietnamese pop since the early 2000s, and the local press often calls her the "Queen of V-pop". The IFPI certified her as the best-selling artist in Vietnam for 2014, and she won that year's World Music Award for Best-Selling Artist in the territory.
Alongside her recordings she has been a judge on Vietnam Idol and a coach on The Voice of Vietnam. In 2008 she set up her own company, Mỹ Tâm Entertainment, and in the same year a charity foundation. Her 2017 album Tâm 9 reached the top ten of Billboard's World Albums chart, a first for a Vietnamese artist.

Early Life
Mỹ Tâm grew up in Da Nang. She took ballet lessons from the age of six for three years and later tried guitar and organ. She won her secondary school's singing contest and then the Gold Award at Beautiful Voice Spring, Da Nang's solo singing competition. She was selected for the Military School of Art in Hanoi but, for family reasons, enrolled at the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory to study voice instead. She graduated in 2001 as a top student.
Career
She signed with Vafaco Record in 1999. In 2000 she won a bronze medal at the Asia New Singer Competition in Shanghai, which she later called a turning point. Her debut album, Mãi Yêu, came out in 2001, and its song "Cây đàn sinh viên" became popular with university students. Her 2003 album Yesterday & Now included the hits "Ước gì" and "Họa mi tóc nâu". She went on to record in South Korea for Fly (2006) and later albums, and she won Singer of the Year at the 2008 Dedication Music Awards.
In 2010 she starred in, and wrote music for, the VTV3 musical drama Cho Một Tình Yêu (For a Love). She judged season 4 of Sao Mai Điểm Hẹn, then seasons 4 and 5 of Vietnam Idol (2012–2014). As a coach on season 3 of The Voice of Vietnam in 2015, she coached the winner, Đức Phúc, in her first season. Her free "Heartbeat" concerts in 2014 drew about 40,000 people in Ho Chi Minh City and 25,000 in Hanoi.
Tâm 9, released in December 2017, became Vietnam's best-selling album of the period and won Album of the Year at the 2018 Dedication Music Awards. In October 2018 she held the concert "My Tam, First Love" at Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul. Her foundation builds houses and funds scholarships for poor families across Vietnam.
