Assala Nasri, known simply as Assala, is a Syrian singer and television personality, born Assala Mostafa Hatem Nasri on 15 May 1969 in Damascus. Called the "Megastar", she is regarded as one of the most powerful voices in Arabic music.

The daughter of Syrian singer and composer Mustafa Nasri, she was performing on children's television by the age of four. Her commercial career began in the early 1990s with Egyptian-dialect tarab songs, and she lived and worked in Cairo for many years. She was a judge on the first season of Saudi Idol in 2022, and in 2026 she returned to Damascus for her first concert in Syria in 15 years.

Early Life

Assala grew up in a musical family in Damascus. Her father, Mustafa Nasri, was a well-known singer and composer who encouraged her talent from an early age.

As a young child she sang patriotic, religious and children's songs on Syrian television, including "Qessas Al Sho'oub", the theme song of the cartoon series Hekayat Alamiyah.

Career

Her first commercial success was "Law Ta'rafou", on an album of four Egyptian songs in the classical tarab style that also included "Ya Sabra Yana" and "Samehtak Ketir". In the 1990s she released albums such as Ya Sabra Yana (1993), Ala Aini (1996) and Mohtama Bel Tafasil (1999). Her awards include the Murex d'Or for best female Arab singer. Her 2020 album La Testaslem became the most-streamed album in Saudi Arabia on Deezer.

She hosted her own TV programme, Soula, on Al Hayat TV and Dubai TV. In 2014 the organisation MasterPeace named her a peace ambassador for the Middle East, and in 2019 she sang on the Special Olympics World Games song "Right Where I'm Supposed to Be" with Ryan Tedder, Avril Lavigne, Luis Fonsi, Hussain Al Jassmi and Tamer Hosny. In 2022 she joined the first Saudi Idol judging panel with Aseel Abu Bakr, Ahlam and Majid Al Mohandis.

Assala publicly supported the Syrian uprising, was removed from the Syrian Artists Syndicate and settled in Cairo with her family. After the fall of the Assad government in December 2024 she released "Syria Janna". In September 2026 she performed at Al-Fayhaa Sports Hall in Damascus, her first concert in Syria since 2010.
