Biography

Nancy Ajram is a Lebanese singer and television personality, born on 16 May 1983 in the Achrafieh district of Beirut. She holds Lebanese nationality and is regarded as one of the most commercially successful female artists in Middle Eastern pop, with reported sales of more than 30 million records by 2007.

Ajram signed with EMI while still a teenager and became a regional star in the early 2000s with Egyptian-dialect hits such as "Akhasmak Ah" and "Ah W Noss". She has released twelve studio albums, two of them for children, and won a World Music Award as the best-selling Middle Eastern artist for her 2008 album Betfakkar Fi Eih.

Television audiences know her as a judge on MBC's Arab Idol from 2013 to 2017 and as a coach on The Voice Kids Arabia for three seasons between 2016 and 2020. She has also been the Arab world's only female spokesperson for Coca-Cola, recording several of the brand's campaign songs.

Early Life

Ajram was born into a Lebanese Orthodox Christian family and is the eldest child of Nabil Ajram and Raymonda Aoun; she has a younger sister, Nadine, and a younger brother, Nabil Jr. With her father's encouragement she began singing as a young child and appeared on several Lebanese television programmes during her early years.

She was around 15 when she signed her first recording contract with EMI, and she was admitted to Lebanon's Syndicate of Professional Artists despite being under the usual age for membership.

Career

Her debut album Mihtagalak came out in 1998, followed by Sheel Oyoonak Anni in 2001. Her breakthrough came after she began working with producer Jiji Lamara: the single "Akhasmak Ah", written by Egyptian composer Mohamed Saad, and the 2003 album Ya Salam gave her a new image and wide popularity. Ah W Noss (2004) produced a string of chart-topping singles, including "Lawn Ouyounak" and "Inta Eyh".

In 2007 she released Shakhbat Shakhabit, an album for children. Betfakkar Fi Eih (2008) yielded seven singles and earned her a World Music Award, making her the youngest Arab winner of that prize. By 2010 she was described as the best-selling Middle Eastern female singer of the decade, and in 2020 she was reported as the most-streamed Arab female artist on Spotify. Newsweek and Arabian Business have both listed her among the most influential Arab entertainers.

Ajram joined the Arab Idol judging panel for its second season in 2013, alongside Ragheb Alama, Ahlam and Hassan El Shafei, and returned for the third and fourth seasons. She later coached on The Voice Kids Arabia.

Ajram married dentist Fadi El Hachem in 2008. The couple have three daughters: Mila (born 2009), Ella (born 2011) and Lya (born 2019).
