Biography
Trấn Thành, full name Huỳnh Trấn Thành, is a Vietnamese comedian, television presenter, actor, screenwriter and director. He was born on 5 February 1987 in Ho Chi Minh City. He is the most commercially successful filmmaker in Vietnam. His films Bố già (Dad, I'm Sorry, 2021), Nhà bà Nữ (The House of No Man, 2023) and Mai (2024) each broke the country's box-office record in turn.
Before he turned to directing, he was best known as a comedian and as the host of many Vietnamese TV shows, including Rap Việt and Siêu trí tuệ Việt Nam. He speaks Vietnamese, English, Cantonese and Mandarin. He married singer and actress Hari Won in December 2016.

Early Life
Trấn Thành was born and raised in Ho Chi Minh City. His father is of Chinese descent from Fujian and his mother is from Tiền Giang. He has two younger sisters. His family went through serious money problems after a business failed, and he has said that growing up poor shaped parts of Nhà bà Nữ. He was accepted to the Ho Chi Minh City Academy of Theatre and Cinema in 2005 but was expelled in his second year for missing classes and unpaid fees.
Career
He started out as a host after winning third prize in a 2006 contest for new MCs. He went on to present many shows, among them Nhanh như chớp nhí, Siêu trí tuệ Việt Nam, Người ấy là ai, Rap Việt and Anh trai "say hi". His skill at impressions led to voice roles in Vietnamese dubs of animated films such as Despicable Me 2 and Madagascar 3. From 2006 he also took mostly small film roles. His profile as an actor grew with the 2019 Tết comedy Cua lại vợ bầu (Win My Baby Back), which became the highest-grossing Vietnamese film at the time.
In 2020 he self-funded the web drama Bố già. He then wrote the feature film version and co-directed it with Vũ Ngọc Đãng. Released in March 2021, it earned about VND400 billion. Nhà bà Nữ, which he directed and released over Tết 2023, overtook it as Vietnam's highest-grossing film. Mai, a drama he directed and also acted in, followed in February 2024. It reached VND500 billion within 20 days and became the highest-grossing Vietnamese film of all time. Through these films he became the first Vietnamese director whose films together grossed more than VND1,000 billion.
