Career
His debut album, Ya Tareeq, came out in 1983, and Ghanny Men Albak (1984) began a run of releases with Delta Sound that included Hala Hala, Khalseen and Mayyal. Albums such as Matkhafesh (1990), Habibi (1991) and Ayyamna (1992) followed, and by 1992 he was one of the first Arab artists to make high-budget music videos.
Nour El Ain (1996), his first album with Alam El Phan, was an international success; the musicologist Michael Frishkopf has described its style as "Mediterranean music", a blend of Western and Egyptian rhythms. He later recorded with Rotana, releasing Leily Nahary (2004), Kammel Kalamak (2005) and El Lilady (2007). His 2009 album Wayah won four African Music Awards, and Shoft El Ayam (2014) reached number one on Billboard's World Albums chart, a first for an Egyptian performer.
From 2016 he released music through his own Nay label, including Ahla w Ahla, Maadi el Nas (2017), Kol Hayaty (2018), Sahran (2020) and Makanak (2023). In 2022 he signed an exclusive deal that made his catalogue available only on Anghami until mid-2024.
Diab has four children. He was previously married to actress Shereen Reda (1989-1992) and to Zeina Ashour (1994-2018), and later to actress Dina El Sherbiny.
