Biography

Mohammed Abdu is a Saudi singer and composer, born on 12 June 1949 in Jazan Province in south-west Saudi Arabia. He is known as the "Artist of the Arabs" and by the nickname "Abu Noura", and is one of the most celebrated voices in Gulf and Arabic music.

His career began in the early 1960s with radio and record work, and spans more than six decades. Among his best-known works is the patriotic song "Fawka Ham al-Sahab", which he also composed, and he has recorded some 200 national works. In 2023 the Riyadh Season honoured him with a pure gold record marking his diamond jubilee.

Early Life

Abdu was born into a poor family; his father was a fisherman who died when Mohammed was very young. His mother then moved the family to Jeddah, where Abdu spent part of his childhood in Ribat Khairy in Old Jeddah, and the family lived for a time in a charitable home for orphaned families.

After finishing primary school he took various jobs, including as an assistant mail distributor, and attended a vocational institute to support his family.

Career

Abdu started singing in the early 1960s. Between 1961 and 1963 he worked in radio, made his first records and performed in radio theatre. One of his early releases, "Al-Ramsh Al-Tawil", sold thousands of copies. He is particularly associated with the oud and with the informal jalsat (sitting) sessions where his musicianship is often heard at its best. In the 1990s he documented older Gulf folk traditions on a series of albums released through his label, Voice of Al-Jazeerah.

After his mother died in 1989 he stopped releasing albums until 1997. That year he sang at the Saudi National Day celebrations and gave three concerts in London with Warda Al-Jazairia. His official comeback came at the Abha Music Festival in 1998, followed by concerts in Qatar, Dubai and Cairo.

For about 30 years he composed and sang the operetta for Al-Janadriya, the National Festival of Heritage and Culture. His songs include "Ajal Nahnou al-Hijaz", "Bint al-Nour", "Ala al-Bal" and "Laylat Khamis". He was honoured at Riyadh Season's Arab Artist Night in 2022, and in 2023 he received a Media Excellence Award from the Ministry of Media as well as the gold record from Turki Al al-Sheikh.
