Taylor grew up in Gilbert, Arizona. She has described her home life as unstable after her parents divorced when she was seven. Drawn to the church's emphasis on family, she began attending Latter-day Saint services on her own and was eventually baptized.
She was accepted to the University of California, Irvine, but chose instead to move to Utah, where she lived near the Brigham Young University campus, worked as a nanny and trained as a dental assistant. Through a Latter-day Saint dating app she met the man she later married. They had two children, born about thirteen months apart, before divorcing.
